Domesticated by humans, the steep valleys and narrow gorges of Béarn are now covered with fields and pastures separated by low walls and groves. Solid peasant houses topped with black roofs dot the landscape while dry stone shepherd huts overlook hazel trees, chestnut trees and fir trees...
Béarn villages harbour both Roman and Gothic houses. On the whole, the region has retained many beautiful bourgeois mansions with slate roofs, manors and castles...
Pau, capital of Béarn, offers a romantic view over the surrounding mountains. It's worth taking a stroll around its squares and parks and visiting its remarkably preserved monuments : the Parliament, the Tower of Currency... Yes, Pau is definitely worth the visit.
